BASE MODEL / MS2018-40

A model born from a singular challenge in 2018.
Drawing on that experience, we revisited the original pattern and updated the details.

During TJAR 2018, Shogo Mochizuki took on an extraordinary challenge.
TJAR is an exceptionally demanding race covering approximately 415 km from the Sea of Japan to the Pacific Ocean, traversing the Northern, Central, and Southern Japanese Alps. His unprecedented attempt was to complete the race without replenishing his food supply.
Mochizuki successfully achieved this goal and finished in an outstanding 7th place overall.

The backpack used for this challenge became the prototype for this model.
It needed to carry a heavy load comfortably without interfering with running, while also providing the durability required for such a long and demanding journey.
The intended load was 15 kg. At the start of the race, the pack actually weighed 14.5 kg, including equipment and food.

This backpack features the same distinctive raised bottom construction found in the MIYAMA series. The shape naturally keeps the center of gravity high, allowing the load to sit in a stable and comfortable position.
Positioning the load high on the upper back has always been a central design principle of blooper backpacks. Among all our models, this one expresses that philosophy most clearly.

The main fabric is 400D Dyneema “Black”.
This rare fabric was almost never available on the general market and is no longer in production. For this release, we used a very limited quantity that had been stored in the back of our workshop.
It has a distinctly different character from 210D Dyneema, with a matte, low-sheen surface and a unique presence.

The main special customizations are as follows.

1. Waist harness with zippered pockets
For carrying heavier loads, we strongly recommend adding a waist harness even to a mid-sized backpack.
On this model, zippered pockets have been added to the harness. Stretch fabric is used for the upper and lower panels, making the pockets suitable for carrying small items needed while moving.

2. Top-mounted helmet holder
In terms of pure retention, a three-point helmet holder that wraps around the main compartment offers greater security.
For this model, however, the helmet holder is positioned on the top in order to preserve easy access to the interior through the center zipper.

3. Frame pad that doubles as a sleeping pad
Because this backpack has a different torso length from our other models, it comes with a specially sized pad as standard equipment.
The 5 mm-thick pad folds into four sections and is secured against the back panel, where it functions as an internal frame and significantly improves carrying comfort.
When fully unfolded, it measures 960 mm in length and can also be used as a half-length sleeping pad.

Additional features include a bottle pocket and stretch pocket on the shoulder harness, as well as a trekking pole holder on the bottom.
A large front mesh pocket provides generous storage capacity.
The original model used a plastic buckle on the top section, but this version has been updated with an aluminum buckle to reduce the risk of breakage in the field.
Inside the main compartment is a zippered pocket with a key hook, suitable for storing keys and other valuables.
